Many MCs have been speaking about paving the way for other rappers but perhaps they should be reminded that POC were the first recognisable hip hop group in SA.
These vets didn’t just make people scream ‘HEITA DA’ but also opposed the atrocities of the apartheid government through their music.
With our own elections this year, what will happen in the wake of the ANC division and more importantly, how will we as headz do more to contribute - especially in areas that need us to stand up and shout about it?
A crew like POC comes around once in a lifetime and those who’ve seen them in action will admit that they’ll be a tough act to follow.
There’s a new wave of cats and they’re not as concerned with preserving the culture as POC were. Perhaps that’s why most of these new school crews will come, go and easily be forgotten.
For 2009 and beyond, let us follow suite and strive to be legendary like POC in our own way. Let us get involved in all matters that concern us. Let us uplift one another, and let us build our hip hop!
