Nokia Music Store is a digital platform that was launched in SA last week, that allows music lovers to download the most exclusive content straight onto their Nokia cellphones from anywhere in the world at minimal costs.
It boasts an extensive selection of more than 4 million songs, including SA’s most prominent hip hop artists, that are available to download at anytime.
The launch of the platform serves an important step forward for South African hip hop who will see financial returns from their projects. Not only does Nokia Music Store provide another avenue as a distribution channel, it is also able to take local hip hop to areas where our distribution companies could not reach in the past.
Artists can have their music featured on Nokia Music Store by negotiating a contact and profit percentage via their record label or managing company.
HYPE caught up with head of music for Nokia in Africa and the Middle East, Jake Larson, to tell us more about the new platform. “Right now the Nokia Music Store offers the most exclusive content at the most reasonable rates. The portal already features a range of different South African and international hip hop artists that include Godessa, Tribe Called Quest, Pro, Zaki Ibrahim and much more. Our objectives are to get as much music to as many people across the world.”
