To so many heads, Slikour is probably the perfect example of how to hustle hard and get that paper. Known to be one of the most business minded, lyrically sharp, big pimpin’ artists in the industry, The Phantom Slikour is on a level of his own. He’s been around to witness the growth of our hip hop first hand, and has worked with so many veterans and new artists.
Over the last few years, hip hop in S.A. has changed dramatically. HYPEmobi managed to get with Slik to talk about the incorporation of other genres into South African hip hop. Pay very close attention.
HYPE: Lately we have seen a lot of S.A hip hop artists incorporate Kwaito and house into their music i.e. JR, Shugasmakx. Do you think this is the direction in which South African hip hop is going?
Slikour: ‘I don't know man. Kwaito is not as prominent as it was anymore so I wouldn't know what assumption we're basing the direction of SA hip hop to be Kwaito. I can almost see it as a whole new sound is coming out because the only Kwaito artists that spit more than 8 bars was Zola and these cats are doing 12 to 16 bars that lead to 8 bar choruses like any typical hip hop song.
